In the beginning of 2016, I was still battling back and forth with the idea of officially starting my photography business again. I had some great reasons to go for it but also some much louder reasons not to. “What if I’m not ready?”
However, when I received a message from Sarah (a dance teacher and owner’s daughter at Dance Arts in Stevensville, where I was taking tap classes) asking me if I would be interested in shooting a collaboration performance between her dance company, Tapestry Dance Company, and another company, Soli Deo Gloria Contemporary Ballet — I nervously and happily accepted. Dance photography is something I have wanted to do more of for a very long time. I LOVE dance and I LOVE photography.
Even though I had plenty of self-doubts, I used this as momentum to start building my website (with a lot of help from my sister-in-law, Beckie) and ordered business cards to hand out at the event. I shot the dress rehearsal on April 22 and performance on the 23rd. The lighting was a major challenge but capturing images in the midst of the excitement and nervous energy that goes on behind the curtain was a dream! And these beautiful dancers were so talented! It was an absolute thrill to work with them!
