Dead leaves whisper and crunch with each step; the breeze whooshes through the trees; waves crash and swirl; birds sing in the distance. In the beautiful, peaceful sounds of nature, I find ease.
In May 2016, I was given the opportunity to photograph some of my favorite fitness people as they practiced using nature as their personal gym. You see, Adrienne is a yoga instructor and Luke is a strength trainer and together they own The Collective. They offer yoga and strength training, of course, but The Collective also offers a variety of holistic services including an array of massage therapy styles and they even have their own Organic Cafe. They frequently offer fitness classes outdoors, using nature instead of fancy equipment. That’s what this photo session at Grand Mere State Park captures. To build both physical and mental strength, they take every opportunity to use the elements of nature; walking, running and crawling up the steep dunes; balancing on fallen trees; leaping, sliding and rolling down sandy paths — barefooted — and they work on breathing exercises and meditation. This was such a fun way to get a full body workout while temporarily shutting out the noise and chaos of the world around us; listening only to the sounds of nature… and the laughter of friends.
